We had an incredible week together!
In math, we have deeply investigated Geometry, focusing on polygons and quadrilaterals. Students played a game, "Guess My Rule" with partners to understand characteristics of shapes, like their angles, sides, lines, etc. One partner would make up a rule (Has two pairs of parallel sides), selecting two polygons that fit that rule (parallelogram, rhombus), and one that did not (trapezoid). Their partner needed to pick other polygons that fit that rule, and one that didn't. The class did a great job with this! They also built polygons out of smaller polygons that fit certain traits, like "it is a quadrilateral with all angles equal, but not all sides equal." This was challenging work, but they worked through it!

We began our next research project this week: Safety. The class has been taking notes on an area of safety. Check in with your child: What is their topic of focus? What have they learned so far?
In writing, we also began revising our writing. We re-read with "lenses," to see how we can improve our drafts. See the chart below to see the strategies that we used to improve our writing.

In reading this week, we have really been enjoying the book The Tiger Rising. This week, we discussed the author's use of symbolism in the book. The class had some amazing ideas about symbols in the book, and what they represented. Ask your child about their opinions on this.
We also analyzed two characters in the book, and how their challenges were similar and different. After capturing our ideas independently, we made this whole class diagram.

In Social Studies, we began our Government unit! Students were introduced to the Essential Questions for the unit, and worked together on Chromebooks to jot down one piece of prior knowledge that they have about our nation's government. See this in the slideshow below! Then, we spoke about what would happen in our school, local community, and nation if we did not have any rules. This lead to a great discussion about the importance of government and laws!
We discussed how our founding fathers believed in the individual rights of life, liberty, and property. In groups, we shared the responsibilities of citizens to ensure these rights.

Last, here we are doing some MeMoves-or meditation in motion! We do this to help us stay calm, focused, and ready to go!
