This week has been happening in D-405! Since it is Violence Prevention Week, we focused on relaxation strategies that we can use. This included "breathing in colors," deep belly breathing, using our self-control station, and discussing how we can be "upstanders" to bullies. We also celebrated Red Ribbon Day with our buddies. We thought about how we live healthy lives, and participated in some exercise activities with our classmates! In math, we moved on to more challenging concepts with subtraction. Students subtracted across zeros, and also subtracted money amounts. We first focused on the standard algorithm, and used place value blocks in order to visualize. The reason why we did this is so that students do not just simply perform the steps. By using place value blocks, students can understand why the standard algorithm works. It is amazing to see how much we have improved in our problem solving since September! Look at these hard workers! As writers, we continued revising our drafts using a variety of strategies. We examined the middle of our stories and "lifted a line" in order to stretch out the most important part with detail. We also took a closer look at our endings to make sure that they were powerful and demonstrated the significance of our stories. We watched the end of Frozen on YouTube to get ideas of how to end in powerful ways. This connected directly to leads: authors also use action/dialogue/setting/narration/combination leads to end their stories. In reading this week, we discussed the plot of a story. Ask your child what the plot means. As we read, we identified the type of conflict, setting, point of view, and important events in the rising action. We will continue to read Shiloh and plot events on a story mountain to identify whether the event is the rising action, climax, or resolution. We learned about the French and Indian War this week, and summarized the event in our own words. We also had the opportunity to share our incredible current event projects. The class did an AMAZING job on this! |
