We had a busy week this week, especially with all that snowy weather!
In math this week, we moved into division. We learned about the meaning of division, and talked about remainders. To solve 2 digit by 1 digit division problems, we used what we know about multiplication to help us. This is called the Tail Division strategy. You can find a presentation that explains how it works on our class portal! Students worked on an everyday example by doing a "Cake Boss" project where they helped Carlos and his bake shop with various types of cake orders. For example, "Carlos has 30 hearts that he is dividing amongst 4 tiers of cake. How many will be on each section, and how many are left over? We also worked on estimating quotients using compatible numbers and multiplication. See the example below to see how this works.
In writing, we began planning our literary essays. We talked about how authors support their topic sentences in a variety of ways. We will continue planning our essays next week! We planned using our own explaining details, making sure we summarize any important information about the book. Then, we started to look for textual evidence (direct quotes from the book) that support our thinking. The class is doing a great job at this!
As readers, we have been wrapping up our non-fiction texts. Students did a comprehension check to answer multiple choice and open-ended questions about their reading. We talked about test-taking strategies for both types of questions. Please see our class portal for some resources in our reading folder for PARCC prep! This can help support students as they answer their open-ended questions at home.
In science, we finished our Ecosystems unit! Students worked on creating a bird of their very own which would allow them to survive in a certain environment. They did a great job with these- very creative!
Have a great weekend,
Mrs. Nastasi
