We have been busy bees in D-405!
In math, we had our EOY PARCC test for Math and Language Arts. We are all done now-besides our NJASK Science on the 27th! We also reviewed for our post-test on Geometry, which students will get back next week. We will be moving on to Data Analysis and Measurement for the end of the year.
As writers, we have continued to record our "books on tape" for Realistic Fiction. We spoke about the mood in our stories, and how this can change as our story evolves. To match the mood, we explored GarageBand to find an accompanying sound effect or jingle. Students put this behind their words to evoke an emotion in their listener. Many of us are finishing up our books. I can't wait for them to share!
The class is REALLY enjoying our Mythology unit in reading so far. We have learned about the characteristics of myths: ask your child what they are. We have also learned about Cautionary Myths: a myth with a lesson that cautions the reader. You should have seen their faces when I decorated our classroom in caution tape and our head custodian, Mrs. Beecher, barged in our classroom to "caution" the class. She explained about how King Midas was in the building and turning everyone to gold! The class had a good laugh. We read two version of Midas (The Golden Touch). After reading, we completed a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast how these two myths are similar and different.

We wrapped up Part 1 of our government unit this week! Students reviewed the Constitutional Convention, and how our government is a democracy. We learned about the terms "representative democracy" and "republic." Ask your child what these terms mean. A representative democracy means that we elect representatives to make important decisions for us. A democracy means that people have the power to govern.
We will have a quiz on Monday to review these ideas: students got a Study Guide today.
Have a great weekend!
