What a busy week! In math this week, we learned three different strategies for multiplication. We started with the array, which is a visual representation of multiplication. Students see how to break a number apart into smaller partial products. Next, we learned the Partial Products method. Last, we learned the Standard Algorithm. We started with other strategies so that students can understand how multiplication can be divided into small partial products so that they understand the steps of the standard algorithm better. We will repeat these strategies when we learn 2 x 2 multiplication next week! In writing, students worked in teams in order to write and publish their own newspaper article! This connects directly with our non-fiction reading unit that we are doing right now. Students had to create section headings with accompanying articles on a certain topic: a book review, school subject review, school event, and Dogo News article. I will be sharing these newspapers with you next week! The class is very proud of their work. As readers this week, we got back into our Daily 5 routine! We reviewed expectations for our reader's workshop, including Teacher Time, Read to Self, Work on Writing, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, and Word Work. We all started new books, which are non-fiction books related to Ecosystems. The class seems very excited about these! We have been reading articles and discussing the difference between important facts and interesting facts. This helps students summarize more clearly: it helps them learn to include the important information in a summary. In science, we have been discussing how all different organisms depend on the sun, in different ways. This has lead to a conversation about producers and consumers. Ask your child what the difference is. We also learned about the three different types of consumers: herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores. We played an activity where students had to match the type of consumer to a consumer (ex. bear --> omnivore, lion --> carnivore, deer --> herbivore). |
