We had a fun and productive week! During math, we worked on multiplying greater numbers. We used arrays, partial products, and the standard algorithm for 2x2, and 3x 2 digit numbers! Ask your child what their favorite strategy is for multiplication. We are almost done with our unit: there is a Zondle game for review if your child has some extra time (the user name/class code was sent to you in an e-mail).
As writers, we began to explore a new genre: literary essay. We spent some time looking at mentor texts, and listing our observations. We compared this new genre to personal essay, filling out a Venn Diagram about similarities and differences. We began generating ideas by being "wide awake readers" and forming thoughts and opinions about books we read.
As readers this week, we continued navigating non-fiction! We spoke about the main idea of a text, and ways to find the main idea (title, subtitles, bold words). We also spoke about the supporting details that the author uses to show that main idea. We also read to try to figure out the author's purpose, and contrasted the author's thinking with our own. They are doing a great job with this!
In science, we spoke about waste this week. Ask your child about examples of waste, and to define it. This lead to a great conversation about what happens to waste: decomposers and scavengers step in! After learning about this, we started a "Mold Terrarium" to observe these first hand. This is a long-term project that will be continued in the next few weeks. Last, we started a food chain/web project on Google Drive today. Students selected an ecosystem, and created a food chain/web within it. I can't wait to see what they come up with.
New homework assignments will be given to students on TUESDAY when we return to school. These will be done on Google Slides.
Have a great weekend,
Mrs. Nastasi
