| We have had a fantastic week together! During math this week, we really "dug deeper" into place value. Students were introduced to several addition/subtraction problems, and were encouraged to use a variety of strategies to solve. Many students came up and acted as the "teachers" and showed their classmates some unique strategies to solve problems. We also went over some "helpful hints" for problem solving in the future. Ask your child which strategy worked best for them. As writers this week, we worked on selecting, planning, and drafting our personal narratives! Students selected a piece that meant a lot to them. They practiced storytelling the moment with a classmate to remember details and plan the moment out in their minds. Then, they captured the beginning, middle, and end on a timeline. We spoke about the importance of planning, and starting the personal narrative at the "hot water," or exciting moment in the story. Students also thought about the "big idea" or significance of their writing, so that when they were drafting their details would align with this bigger message. We began Word Work this week as a class, and discussed options for activities during the week. Students will have the option to complete their Word Work in class. Whatever isn't finished would become homework. Students have four activities per week. Now, students have been introduced to all of the elements of Daily 5: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Word Work, and Work on Writing. I showed them the management chart that they will use to select two options each day during this time when I am meeting with students for "Teacher Time (Guided Reading.) We had our first day of choices today. They did amazing and seemed to really enjoy it. Check in with your child: What did they choose? How did it go? Students have been doing an amazing job of using online and print sources in order to take notes on one of the 13 colonies. With a partner, they investigated the topic and took notes on the daily life, natural resources, important cities, the date it was founded, among other topics. They will be working on posters to "teach" their colony to the class. We have some strong researchers in our class! We spoke about how to take strong notes: accurate, paraphrased, specific, on topic, etc. |
